James Redden trekking through the snow

In December 2017, ex-soldier, public speaker and IT consultant, James Redden (www.jamesredden.co.uk) will embark on a full distance solo, unsupported and unaided ski to the Geographic South Pole. By undertaking this challenge James aims to raise awareness and funding for Soundabout and Meningitis Now, while also completing the mission in under 30 days to set a new UK record!

Having already skied to the Geographic North Pole in 2016, James is no stranger to the challenges he’ll face, but covering a distance of about 700 miles, this expedition will be even tougher! The conditions will be brutal; with a climb from sea level to about 3000 metres in temperatures as low as -40 C and into winds of up to 80 Mph, meaning the kit he takes with him will be truly “mission critical”.

Given the solo nature of his expedition, the communications element will be crucial, providing James’ link to the outside world. To ensure he stays connected James will be taking an Iridium 9575 Satellite Phone and an Iridium GO! Satellite Wi-Fi Hotspot, allowing him to check in, access social media, share photos and keep everyone updated on his progress – despite being in one of the most remote locations in the world.

GRC are proud to partner alongside Microsoft in support of James and wish him all the best in this incredible adventure!

Thuraya has launched a dual-mode, dual-Sim phone. The Thuraya XT-Pro dual bridges the gap between satellite and terrestrial communications, allowing users to move seamlessly across terrestrial and satellite mobile coverage.

The handset comes with a dedicated SIM slot for satellite communications and a second one for GSM communications. The new handset's 'Always On' capability lets users alternate between networks, ensuring they are always reachable on both the satellite and the terrestrial networks.

Callers can be contacted on their GSM number even while on an active satellite call - and vice versa. The Thuraya XT-Pro dual is designed for users who frequently move in and out of terrestrial coverage, like government missions, and oil and gas refinery and exploration companies, both on and offshore.

The phone also comes with advanced navigation capabilities through GPS, BeiDou, Glonass and Galileo. Users of the Thuraya XT-Pro dual can also share current coordinates, enter waypoints to navigate to specific positions using the electronic compass, and use position logging.

As a global satellite communications service provider, GRC are able to offer the Thuraya XT-Pro Dual, as well as airtime and support, delivering a complete package to suit your needs.

Whatever your reason for travelling, in today’s busy world, communication is critical. So what happens when you pull out your trusty mobile phone and see the dreaded no signal? This is where satellite phones (sat phones) deliver the answer.

Unlike traditional mobile phones, which rely on a signal using local infrastructure, satellite phones, as the name would imply,  receive their signal direct from satellites, allowing them to operate globally  and in the most remote regions in the world. Using a satellite phone can also allow you to take advantage of more affordable call options too, often offering better value than traditional mobile operators in many countries.

Examples of utility:

•         Adventurous exploration/projects?
•         Exotic holiday?
•         Important business trip?
•         Government travel?
•         Educational Trips in remote regions?
•         Business Continuity?

Think a sat phone might be right for you? GRC are here to help!

We have a range of products to suit varying needs, including innovative flagship models like the Thuraya SatSleeve+ and the Thuraya SatSleeve Hotspot.

Both of these devices use your existing mobile smartphone, giving you the advantages of a sat phone when you need one and the convenience of your own device when you don’t.

With the Thuraya SatSleeve+ your phone mounts directly on to the device using a universal adaptor. This supports most iPhone models and popular Android devices, giving you an easy to use all in one option.

The Thuraya SatSleeve Hotspot offers you the same features, without the need to be directly attached to your phone. This allows the hotspot to be placed in a convenient nearby location, like outside your tent, vehicle or even on your hotel balcony, potentially offering you a better signal, while allowing you to stay comfortable indoors.

Whichever option you choose, when you’re in the middle of nowhere, it’s nice to know the rest of the world is just a phone call away... and with the SatSleeve+ and SatSleeve Hotspot it is!

Earlier this year Global Radiodata Communications (GRC) delivered Scytale Lite, a rucksack based communications solution, to the welfare service operated by Airbus Defence and Space.

We are now delighted to announce that Airbus Defence and Space have added the GRC Scytale (the larger 8 port solution) to their mobile welfare communications portfolio to work alongside them and their global commercial operator network to provide and deliver scalable welfare communications solutions, as part of their Wel2Go suite.

The GRC Scytale package provided is a flexible, reliable, cost effective communication solution, with the added ability to provide a communication infrastructure when no existing network is in place. This works well for a range of industrys including emergency responders, government, commercial and aid agency organisations facing critical communication challenges.

Iain Pope, Managing Director at GRC, commented: This is a fantastic development to an already positive agreement with Airbus Defence and Space. GRCs ability to customise and tailor to customers’ needs means that we are capable of reaching the high standards and requirements expected at this level of critical communications operations

This week the GRC G2 Solutions team are in Cyprus attending the Inmarsat Global Xpress (GX) Bootcamp. The next couple of days will see GRC gearing up alongside Inmarsat and partners for the full global launch of Inmarsat’s new GX services.

GRC have been proud supporters and suppliers of Inmarsat’s satellite services for a number of years. The new US$1.6bn Inmarsat-5 F2 (I-5 F2) satellite has been launched and airborne since the 1st of February 2015, and GRC have been working keenly towards the full roll out and delivery of this new faster, chunkier bandwidth bearing network.

The new Global Xpress (GX) network will not only deliver broadband speeds which are more than 100 times faster than the Inmarsat’s fourth generation (I-4) constellation; but offers opportunities for end-users, in both the public and private sectors, to significantly enhance their connectivity and bandwidth even in the most remote and inaccessible regions of the world.

GRC Scytale and Scytale Lite customers who use these portable, private communication networks are good examples of particular beneficiaries for this supercharged new airtime and data service. It is ideal for military, aid agencys, emergency responders and commercial users that require fast, flexible communications and with the choice of a secure VPN.

As Inmarsat are industry leaders and pioneers of mobile satellite communications GRC work closely with Inmarsat to deliver the best supporting coverage and service to our own customers. Working perfectly with our Connect 100Connect 100TAtom 65Connect 180G-3075 and G-5075 Antenna Systems; the quality, reliability and speed that this new orbital GX satellite now offers is a major step in the best direction.

GRC are looking forward to hearing David Hartshorn’s (Secretary General Global VSAT Forum) talk on the Spectrum fight.

In a recent interview, David spoke passionately about the increased regulation and governance of type approved antenna systems and control of allowing non satellite companies to use spectrum space that has historically been used for satellite and bands that will be in the future. This type of work is of paramount importance to secure a satellite industry for the future.

The GVF have been operating for the last 17 years as a voice of the satellite industry.

Come and listen to David’s full talk on the subject at VSAT 2015, London Royal Garden Hotel 16-18th September.
